SUMMARY Social technologies have been modifying the rules of «given-for-granted-private-sphere» and «public-sphere-as-a-result-of-intentional-activities» which people normally apply to real life. Participation in digital social media is often based on the rules «given-for granted-public-sphere» and «private-sphere-as-a-result-of-intentional-activities» being observed is simply an integral part of participating. Rather than calling oneself out or «unplugging», many participants are developing techniques to manage those same dynamics which famous people have been coping with for ages: a life which is constantly watched over. What gives them power is not technology or regulations, but the capability of acting as an agency. People are not simply individuals or parts of a group: they are active members of social networks, connected by information, time and space and they have to handle their life as a series of relationships. When people understand their place in this constellation, than they can win the essence of privacy itself. Moreover, only when they act as an agency, can people respond rationally and responsibly to surveillance.
