Un drammaturgo rilegge un drammaturgo. «Il caso Winslow» di David Mamet
digital
Year:
2011
SUMMARY
Among the adaptations of plays, this is a particularly significant case, as a man dealing with cinema, who is also originally a theatre writer, translates from one medium to another. The work of David Mamet on The Winslow Boy by Terence Rattigan allows stimulating reflections, both on this case and more generally on the transposition of the play to the big screen. Inspired by a judicial report of the Edwardian era that had drawn the attention of the British public, Rattigan’s text is considered one among the fundamental texts of the English Theatre, not only for its literary qualities, but also in terms of content, and particularly significant for retracing the history of the struggle for human rights. Then, taking into account the previous adaptations of the work, the article focuses on Mamet’s film, and analyses it in terms of writing and staging, so as to define the key chosen by the author: a scrupulous fidelity to the author’s original intent without renouncing to provide a personal cut in emphasizing the relationships between the characters and the hierarchy of individual and social values.

Scrivere l’autobiografia di un altro. Intervista a Robert Harris, autore del romanzo «Il Ghostwriter»
digital
Year:
2007
The meeting-interview with Robert Harris, English novelist, author of a number of best sellers many of which
have been transposed into successful films, offers the occasion to reflect on the singular profession of ghostwriter,
that is to say the author of on-commission biographies of famous personages. Starting from the analysis
of the genesis of the author’s last novel, whose protagonist is a ghost writer, the essay analyzes the writing
techniques used in the attempt to build a biography through a third party, emphasizing the positive features
of the object, thanks to rhetorical artifices of many kinds.
The careful analysis of the novel theme and of its references (real persons and events) gives the opportunity
to consider the risks and consequences of a mediatized society. It also retraces the professional path of
Harris, who was the author of his novel and now is also involved in the adaptation of this novel for the screen.
