I mediahanno cambiato pelle.
SUMMARY
Within the cultural and philosophical debate of the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century, animated by
a lively interest in the issues of language and sign, the trace is certainly one of the dominant themes: the analysis
and the evolution of this concept can be primarily attributed to the thought of E. Lévinas and J. Derrida.
The latter, in particular, has conducted a rigorous rethinking of the trace, even if inspired by the thought of
Heidegger; it exceeds its inheritance and evolves into a genuinely innovative direction. By Lévinas, Derrida
is put in a position to rethink Heidegger’s category of event, releasing it from the silence of the original past
and opening it to the future of responsible decision. The trace, «past that has never been present», as defined
by Lévinas, is revealed as the original place of the possibility of the decision, in which otherness, uniqueness
and ethical responsibility are intertwined in an inseparable way.
The reflection on the trace thus leads to the identification of a human structure as far as possible from
a closed system, only conceivable as a ‘strategic open device’.
SUMMARY
This essay aims at investigating the nature of a complex object: a web-based map produced in recent months
in order to trace the evolution of an infectious disease, known as swine flu. The circuit of signs and events that
the map has drawn, the cycle of web contacts generated by the fear of contagion, the patterns of the discourse,
are being investigated as a process and discourse, scientific practice and traces of socialization, the emerging
of a documents made of intentions and feedbacks, of queries and results. It is made of intents that characterize
us and of traces that we follow as traffic signs. Scenes of reality in which the map is fed and feeds, in turn,
imaginary that techno-science, movies, science fiction have produced for us, establishing themselves as the
world operating instructions.
SUMMARY
The article aims to illustrate the results of an exploratory research conducted to understand the relationship
between trace and social network, analyzing three different online environments (Facebook, Twitter,
Friendfeed) starting from practices implemented by those who live them every day. A research facility has
been implemented that would combine the mapping of the various online platforms with the observation of
some users’ practices, chosen between Internet early adopters and heavy users, where social networks were
both subject and research tool. The main result that emerged is that between social networks and trace there
is a structural link: the social network can only exist thanks to the users whose use and consumption of traces
is configured both as a collective practice, because in the other person they also find a co-author, and as a
work that the person creates, relating to the instrument and to other people. Contents can also be defined
either as traces, but not as simple signs, as the referral process is always open. Indeed, they are also left
beyond a real presence of the issuer and the recipient, not losing their meaning, but rather relying on the interpretation
of those who will read it and on their freedom to put it in contexts other than those for which it was
designed.
SUMMARY
In this paper we propose a theoretical model aimed at providing a possible interpretation of a fascinating phenomenon
that has been the subject of numerous investigations from both a scientific and humanistic point of
view: amnesia.
To do this we have analyzed Radiodue broadcast, Amnesia. The host, Matteo Caccia, proposes his story
in form of autobiographical narration, having been hit by a global retrograde amnesia that has erased all memories
of his past life, and his subsequent rediscovery of the world as if it was for the first time.
The analysis uses an interdisciplinary approach and investigates memory on the one hand as engramme,
a cerebral memory trace, and on the other hand as exogramme, i.e. a material trace outsourced on a physical
medium.
The work aims to highlight the complexity of the memory system, a heterogeneous plot of components,
and considers two levels, the internal body, and the outside.
The first level studies the extent of individual memory and how the research of memory and the construction
of new experiences are mediated through the relationship between body and environment. On one
hand the body becomes the medium to create a new experience storage, on the other hand it becomes the tool
to search for memory traces of its past. However, no one will argue that specific stimulation results in a specific
recollection, but following the most recent neuro-scientific studies, the stimulus generates an interpretation
of reality that is based on the mood of the recalling person, and on the experiential substratum underlying
the reconstruction of memory. In this way the action of reminiscence is closely related to the dimension
of the present.
The second level deals, however, with the objectification of memory in a concrete form. Using the term
‘exogramme’, coined by Merlin Donald, we will analyze the exogrammes as if they had individual collective
and cultural memory, through the protagonist’s personal exogrammes, his photographs, his family albums
mixing his memory with that of his family, and through what we call cultural exogramme, the archive in Rai
Milan headquarters. All Matteo’s broadcasts are stored there, an ‘absolute’ archive of his individual memory
and, simultaneously, a media archive, that is widespread, can be copied and become a users’ exogramme.
Finally, we conclude by proposing a possible analysis paradigm of memory process that we call neurocultural-
medial, crossing on one hand the practical aspects of people’s memory and on the other hand the context
in which individuals live, able to shape the individuals’ reminiscence practices
SUMMARY
In recent years there has been an increasing tendency to participate in tours, guided and organized by tour
operators, to explore some areas devastated by war (Sarajevo, Auschwitz) or by natural and nuclear disasters
(New Orleans and Chernobyl).
This phenomenon is intertwined with real trace necrophilia, pushing the tourist-voyeur, now accustomed
to increasingly bloody and violent media images, to enable on one side a first contact with the tragedies
of the past, on the other to fatally empathize with both victims and perpetrators, protagonists of those events.
Working on diverse productions (the video-artistic work War Tourist by Emmanuel Licha and some
homemade videos posted on YouTube), this essay will identify the meaning of such representations, which
not only translate into images the experience of a trip to the border between commemoration and desecration,
but also establish a precarious balance between proximity and distance in the appropriation of the signs of
reality, marked by an irreducible difference with the reassuring universe of tourists
SUMMARY
The filmic device is currently the focus of a movement that expands its scope of application, expression and
relevance. For this reason, cinema and contemporary art offer many examples of how the cinematic instance
is associated with many different media forms and with different socio-cultural practices. These include
images, still or moving, carried out for control purposes, which seem to be particularly significant in the present
context. An analysis of these visual forms can thus trace the logic that characterizes the supervisory
arrangements, understanding the influences on the subjects and the implications in relation to space. Two case
studies are particularly interesting in this regard: Shopping Mall by Jamie Wagg and Die Schöpfer des
Einkaufswelten by Harun Farocki. These works focus the observation on the ‘society of discipline’ and lend
themselves to an interpretation, putting the idea at the centre of the trace. This notion is then taken as the key
to the identify the corpus; declined in the double variant ‘empirical trace’ and ‘filmic trace’. It forms indeed
the conceptual background in which it is possible to identify the dynamics of presence-absence, dissemination-
fixing, territorialization-deterritorialization underlying the monitoring mechanisms
contemporain.

on the disciplining force of watching, reveal one of the fundamental features of the attitude of contemporary
art towards the media and devices: the ability to take and use them freely in a creative and new way,
bringing forth the featured functions they are called to exercise more than their specific technology. An attitude
that shows how contemporary art can be regarded as an area of particular interest to study the changes
in contemporary media landscape.
SUMMARY
The fatigue of the story itself in the form of portrait – both pictorial and literary – is one of the most successful
and spread forms of self-representation. The constant search of a definition by the individual of his
own name – that represents his specificity – clashes with the elusiveness of the uniqueness, which resents
being represented by a unique shape always identical to itself.
In the balance between the needs of (self) representation and the fragility of the name, the novel by José
Saramago Manual of Painting and Calligraphy (1977) proves a fruitful place for the practice of tracing the
self that emphasizes its constitutive ambivalence. The story of an artist who is not named – indicated by the
simple initial H. – Who decides to leave his art to devote himself to writing, searching in it a more effective
expression of the self, introduces us to the deepening of the relationship between the practice of tracing and
the forms the trace, highlighting their deep intertwining.
No name (picture) can achieve a comprehensive knowledge on the subject, but the subject cannot escape
the attempt to trace itself, better to hold on to itself. The authentic portrait/self-portrait are not defined in relation
to the similarity with their referent, but from being traces of otherness in this form of absence going through
the identity of each one. The representation exposes the subject and at the same time misses it, revealing itself
as dynamic and continuous rewriting and not as a mere re-presentation of the features of the subject.
The search for a form of permanence that goes beyond the shadow enveloping identity can not but
decline itself in a fecund re-telling and re-writing itself, in which dissemination and establishment of the self
are dynamically active and present together.
SUMMARY
The practice of following traces and the searching for evidences or clues have become, throughout the twentieth
century, widely used tòpoi in cultural productions in a variety of levels. In a privileged way they have become
the heart of that trans-medial genre, which we define ‘giallo’ (crime novel) in Italy. In this context, the statute
accorded to the trace becomes a fundamental theme for the narrative construction. We recognize three major
occurrences. The trace is the footprint of a crime, recognizing the need in the same the necessary arrival point of
a path of which reconstruction is always possible. The investigator figure coincides with that of positivist scientist.
A new figure of detective is superimposing to him, facing an often misleading reality, and having to bet on
his beliefs and solve cases, especially through action. In this view, the trace is felt as a trompe l’oeil, a station of
a path devoted more to losing itself than to trying to rebuild an already inaccessible reality. Faced with the aesthetic
of unintelligibility of reality, the idea of trace opposes as a form of resistance to entropy. The core of the
investigation is not its result, but the investigation itself, as a condition of continuous challenge to indistinctness.
In this case the investigator is the man in continuous and infinite search of the meaning of his own life.
On considère
SUMMARY
The trace, a constitutively dialectical place suspended between its evidence and the uncertainty of a distant
reference, is meant here in particular in relation to the idea of continuity, in the artifact of its creator’s sign
(Benjamin, The Narrator), and to the semiological-linguistic interpretation that was given to this problem.
The trace is therefore considered as deictic reference to the subject of enunciation and Benveniste’s ‘speech
situation’, to retrace in some of its fundamental parts the debate on the enunciation of the film, with particular
reference to Metz’s ‘impersonal enunciation’. Therefore, the focus will be on overturning the linguistic
notion of deixis, according to Metz’s formula that reduces the enunciative track to mere ‘landscape trace’.
Therein lies the epistemological boundary cutting the deictic link between the trace (text) and its (empirical)
origin: on one side the enunciative mark results in turning down to meta-discourse (in which the film is present
in reference to itself, also as a body); on the other side, the subject is represented as a place of decentralization
and absence in the (post-) structuralist lesson. Despite, or rather through Metz’s strict adherence to this
theoretical framework, in the self-referential irreducibility that the sensible quality of the film offers and
opposes to the linguistic relevance, emerges what we consider legitimate to define, in the words of Barthes,
an ‘exit from the text’.
SUMMARY
In their historical development, the modern media have referred to two different logics of the trace. The photography-
based mechanical media, such as cinema, refers to an idea of trace as inscription: the image and
sound reproduced are due to a fixation for leaving a mark and are thus witness of the event sustained production
that created them. The electronic media such as radio, television and video in general, refer to an idea
of trace as transcription: images and sounds derive from a survey which brings back different sensory elements
within a unitary representation and allows monitoring an environment and its changes. When the media
based on mechanics and those based on electronics have lived together within a social space, the two logics
of inscription and transcription have constituted an important principle of individuation (that of distinction
and articulation) of different media experiences.
Digital media implement, with respect to this framework, some major shifts: they make some processes
of inscription and transcription converge and interact closely; also make immediate the traceability of the
presence and actions of the user, and finally put up a hypertrophy tracking process. From these profound
changes arises a paradox which deeply characterizes the current landscape: a de-individuation of the media
corresponds to a hyper-individuation of the situations used by the media themselves.
The article explores this paradox by analyzing the processes of tracing to be found in videogame Spore
(Will Wright, Maxis / Electronic Arts, 2008), and proposes interpretations in this regard.
