SUMMARY This paper is focused on the evolution from offline to online videogames. This passage is analyzed through the examples of many multiplayer games and virtual communities built around some of the most popular videogames. In the first part we consider two features of videogames – even if this definition is for us inadequate to describe the richness and complexity of this hypermedium – : they are interactive stories, open to social sharing and they have the same strength and ability to involve users as other more traditional means of expression (like literature, cinema and theatre) from which they take many features to combine them in new and different ways. What characterizes videogames is the importance of the relational aspects of stories, which expands narration on a collective scale and makes this narration active and theatrical. Online games are also analyzed from the point of view of social networks and particular attention is given to all the forms of user involvement typical of multiplayer games for children and teenagers. These games often involve written or oral verbal interactions, and they have forums inside which users talk about matches played. These communities create a strong engagement and involvement in players. What are the main changes that we can analyze in the transition from offline to online? What kind of skills are developed, which relationships are possible and which are the main risks? The essay proposes a classification of online games from the point of view of communication theories and theories about narratives (here we approach the studies of Bolter, Manovich, Harrigan, Wardrip-Fruin and Crawford). We also focus our attention on some examples of games which are of particular interest and on some web sites which offer different chances to play online: large and very crowded communities, like the ones related to soccer simulation (Fifa, Pro Evolution Soccer), which are growing very fast, together with games for Ps3 and Xbox Live, ‘theme parks’ for children and teenagers, like Stardoll or Habbo, and the enormous virtual worlds of narrative and social interaction like World of Warcraft. Online games are evaluated in many ways, two of them are for us of particular interest: the first one is PEGI, created by the European Union in cooperation with the main institutions, producers and parents’ associations in the field. The second one is parental control, technologies to block contents not suited to children, which are evolving very fast.
